About Mavuno Harvest Their Story Sub-Saharan Africa is the poorest region on Earth, with over 70% of the population living in rural areas, wholly dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. NGO's and foreign governments pour money into Africa, attempting to alleviate this poverty, yet still rural farmers can often only sell a small portion of their harvest at below market prices. While serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in a tiny village in Kenya called Miti Mingi, Phil Hughes came up with the idea for Mavuno Harvest. What if there was a way to provide jobs and economic opportunity for rural farmers in Africa, while at the same time solving the issue of wasted harvests? Mavuno Harvest works with small farming cooperatives to create supply chains to bring delicious, organic dried fruit from rural sub-Saharan Africa to the American consumer. They provide markets for these farmers and their products, thus increasing incomes, securing existing jobs and even creating new ones. And finally, by bringing these delicious dried fruits to their customers, Mavuno Harvest gives consumers in the U.S. the opportunity to directly impact struggling communities and economies in Africa, while enjoying delicious, healthy and organic snacks. Their Impact One of the poorest regions on the planet, Sub-Saharan Africa suffers from crippling poverty and unemployment. With few jobs and little industry, rural communities depend on farming for survival, with many farmers earning less than $2 per day. Mavuno Harvest was founded to help these farming communities prosper, and introduce natural and organic dried fruit to markets worldwide. During peak season, fruit supplies meet demand and prices drop very low. On average, farmers only sell up to a third of their harvest; leaving the vast majority of fruit unsold or left behind to rot. Mavuno Harvest works with local fruit drying facilities in Uganda and Burkina Faso to purchase the remaining harvest. Drying fruit opens new markets, creates jobs for the local community and extends the life and prosperity of the food supply. Mavuno Harvest increases the value of African fruit products by opening new markets. Nutritious dried fruits like mango, banana, pineapple, jackfruit and papaya are grown organically and produced without added sugar or preservatives.
