Tascam iM2
I've been looking to purchase something to record acoustic piano and I took a chance on this. It works very well. Of course, you can't use it for professional recordings, but it's very clear and very much improved on the built in microphone. I've used it with an ipad 2 and an iphone 4s. A word of advice though, when recording with an iphone you need to put it into airplane mode. If you don't, you'll get interference in your recordings caused by the phone's radio. You can turn the stereo mics in order to point them in different directions (they turn as a pair, not individually). It also has it's own pre-amp, volume controls and limiter. There's an app you can download made by Tascam which is very good, but the mic is also supported by other apps. However, the only app I've tested it with, besides the Tascam app, is MultiTrack and it works fine.I'd also like to mention that this mic is excellent at recording voice conversation if you wanted to use it as a dictaphone. It's really clear and when no one is speaking, you hear no background hissing.I loaned my mic to my piano teacher who has also been looking to buy something to record with and he's since bought one himself. For the money, it's very good and of course very portable.

Classic Recording
Having read the other reviews on this product I wasn't sure what to expect! I have to say that I am extremely pleased indeed.I am a professional musician in charge of the music in one of the ancient Cathedrals of England and it is always very useful to be able to actually hear what your choir sounds like from where the "audience" hear it.This Tascam product has captured the the choir of boys choristers and professional men singers and the cathedral organ, not forgetting the resonance of the Cathedral brilliantly.Wholeheartedly recommended.

Terrible product
A waste of time and money - I would not purchase this product. The record quality is ok - but the volumes are terrible and the Tascam App non-functioning.Even when recording your voice with the volume at its highest and the limiter off, the volume level is almost inaudible on playback. To be heard you need to speak into the microphone from a distance of maybe 2inches, and even then the voice comes out severely distorted.Another major flaw - it plugs in to the base of the iPhone, meaning that it covers your iphone speakers - this means playback is only possible through headphones.Total disappointment and I've sent it straight back.

Low output
Gives quite a low output compared to the standard iPad microphone.

Standalone Tascam devices are far better.
As a BassPlayer, I record my band rehearsals in studios and all sorts of places. I bought a Tascam GT-R1 nearly 3 years ago now. Also have a Sony zoom which is apparently the best on the market though i find the Tascam i had was far easier and quicker to use. This Tascam IM2 i thought be great as a backup and record sessions straight onto my ipad but honestly not that much better than recording on the internal mic on an iphone 4/4s ... and the lack of features and file sharing restrictions is pretty awful on the tascam recording app that it makes this device practically useless. If you can afford it purchase a standalone Tascam recorder- i promise you wont regret it.
